Venice FEAST Colloquium
The first meeting of the "Formal and Experimental Advances in Sign
language Theory" (FEAST) colloquium will take place at the
University of Venice on June 20-22, 2011.
The grammars of sign languages are as highly complex as the grammars of
spoken languages and share with them many universal features, despite the
difference in modality between spoken languages (which use the auditory
channel) and sign languages (which use the visual channel). Yet, sign
languages also differ from spoken languages in radical ways: morphological
information in sign languages is often conveyed simultaneously by
different articulators rather than linearly; moreover, certain aspects of
their phonological, syntactic and semantic structures are not commonly
found in spoken languages. These differences raise an interesting
challenge both for formal linguistic and experimental research
frameworks.
FEAST aims at becoming a regular forum to discuss formal approaches to
sign language grammar (in particular in the generative tradition),
experimental approaches to sign languages, and their interaction.
Tentatively, the 2012 "FEAST" should be organized by the
University of Goettingen.
Keynote speakers
Karen Emmorey (San Diego State University)
Gaurav Mathur (Gallaudet University)
Markus Steinbach (University of Goettingen)
Submissions
Submissions are now invited for Venice FEAST. Authors are asked to
submit their abstracts as e-mail attachments in .pdf format to the
following address: venicefeast@unive.it
We plan to have oral presentations (40 minutes long plus 10 minutes of
discussion) as well as a poster session. The poster session will be
preceded by a special session in which each poster presenter will be
allotted 5 minutes to introduce the topic of his/her poster.
The anonymous abstract should include the title and indicate whether it
is intended for poster or oral presentation. The title of the paper, name
of the author(s), affiliation(s), surface mail address and e-mail address
should be included in the e-mail message. Abstracts should not be longer
than two pages in length (including tables, examples and references), in
12-point type, single line spacing and 2,5 cm. margins. Abstracts will be
reviewed by an external panel and the reviewing process will be
double-blind.
Deadline for submission: February, 28 2011.
Notification of acceptance/rejection: April 6, 2011.
The official languages of the conference will be English
and ASL. ASL/English interpreting will be provided.

Info
for poster presentations and poster sessions:
Watch a video from the
conference!
As anticipated in the call for papers, following a practice introduced in
other conferences, every poster presenter will be allotted 5 to 7 minutes
to illustrate the topic of his/her poster. This presentation (in ASL or
English) should give some background to facilitate the discussion of the
poster rather than being a concise presentation of its content. As you
can see from the program, short poster presentations are scheduled in the
time-slot immediately preceding the poster session.
Here are some details about the poster sessions:
The poster stands will be located on the lateral sides of the Conference
Room. Measures of the panels are 1 by 1.5 meter portrait size. It would
be great if posters will be on their stand from the morning.

From the Marco Polo Venice
Airport
You can take the ACTV road bus n° 5 (orange bus) or ATVO road bus (blue
bus) that end at Piazzale Roma road taxi and bus terminal. Both buses
leave from the platforms outside the arrival hall of the Airport. The
drive takes approx. 25 minutes. Information about the timetable and
prices is available
at ACTV website: http://www.actv.it/
and at ATVO website: http://www.atvo.it/.
From the Marco Polo Venice Airport, you can also reach the centre of
Venice by taking the Alilaguna waterbus, a direct service between the
Marco Polo Airport and the Venice centre. Further information about the
Alilaguna waterbus is available
at Alilaguna website: http://www.alilaguna.com/
From Piazzale Roma (road taxi
and bus terminal)and from the Venice Santa Lucia train station
The Auditorium S. Margherita is easy to reach by walking from Piazzale
Roma road taxi and bus terminal and from the Venice Santa Lucia train
station. The walking distance is about 15-20 minutes. Please refer to the
map. Otherwise it is possible to get to the Auditorium S. Margherita
either from the train station or from Piazzale Roma taking the ACTV
waterbus route no. 1, getting off at the stop S. Toma' or Ca' Rezzonico.
In both cases, the Auditorium is just a short 5 minute walk from the
stop. For more information and the route timetables refer to the ACTV
website.
